When the Weight Feels Heavy: A Love Letter to Nonprofit Leaders and Changemakers

Nonprofit leaders are a special breed. They’re the ones who run toward the fire, not away from it. They work long hours not for profit, but for purpose. They wake up thinking about how to heal communities, fight injustice, lift others up, and somehow still make payroll by Friday.

It takes a rare kind of person to do this work, and an even rarer kind to do it well.

I’ve spent more than half of my career in the nonprofit world, and I’ve seen firsthand just how much heart, courage, and resilience it takes. I’ve been side by side with leaders in boardrooms and on the front lines. I’ve led teams, built systems, secured funding, and held space for growth through some incredibly complex and painful moments. I’ve also stood in the storm of political and ideological backlash, watching good people do everything right and still face attacks designed to break their spirit and dismantle their work.

And lately, that storm seems to be intensifying.

We are living through a time when the very idea of collective care is being undermined—when speaking up for human rights, environmental justice, or the dignity of marginalized communities can make you a target. Nonprofits are being squeezed from all sides: drying funding streams, staff burnout, growing needs, and political resistance that borders on the surreal.

If you’re reading this and feeling weary, you’re not alone.

I know what it feels like to keep showing up, even when the system feels rigged against progress. I know the quiet moments where the mission still matters deeply, but the fuel in the tank is low. I also know the power of finding someone who sees you, not just as a leader or a changemaker, but as a human being doing your best under impossible conditions.

That’s why I do the work I do now.

Over the past few years, I’ve been growing two branches of my work: one in coaching and one in organizational transformation. But the truth is, they’re not separate. Both come from the same place in me—the part that believes change is still possible, especially when we support the people brave enough to lead it.

So today, I’m bringing those two paths together. SparkShift Coaching, my coaching practice for nonprofit leaders and rising changemakers, is now fully folded into Transformetic, my consultancy focused on people-positive organizational development and adaptive leadership. Coaching is still a large part of what I offer—but it now lives inside a broader commitment: to help mission-driven people and teams thrive, even in the hardest of times.

Because we need you, and you deserve to be resourced, supported, and strengthened—not just for the work, but for your own life and leadership.

So if you’re feeling the strain, if the flame is flickering, know this:

You are not alone. The pressure you’re feeling is real. And there are ways to reconnect with your purpose, navigate the uncertainty, and find a way through that doesn’t cost you your well-being.

If you need a sounding board, a guide, or simply someone to hold space while you sort through what’s next, I’m here.

Let’s keep showing up, together.
