Embracing a Self-Management Mindset: Six Principles for Co-Leading

In my upcoming book, Organizing for Impact, I explore what I call the IMPACT mindset—essential principles for thriving in self-managed environments where co-leadership is key. Here’s a brief synopsis of these six principles and how they can be adopted individually to cultivate effective co-leadership:

1. Self-Awareness Over Ignorance

Self-awareness involves understanding our own emotions, strengths, weaknesses, and drives. It requires us to be intentional about learning how we show up and interact with others. This principle emphasizes mindfulness, which helps individuals gain a deeper understanding of their internal drivers and reactions. By prioritizing self-awareness, we foster a more empathetic and collaborative workplace, moving away from fear-based behaviors toward a more open, understanding, and proactive approach to challenges.

2. Curiosity Over Resistance

Curiosity over resistance involves fostering a culture where learning, openness, and adaptability are the norms. This principle encourages individuals to view challenges as opportunities for growth and possibility. By shifting our focus from knowing all the answers to being willing to learn and experiment, we create an environment conducive to innovation and resilience.

3. Trust Over Suspicion

Building trust is fundamental for healthy, productive relationships and organizational cultures. This principle encourages us to move beyond self-protection and fear-based actions. By recognizing and addressing hidden drivers like stealth intentions and expectations, we can create a culture of psychological safety and mutual respect, where trust becomes the foundation for collaboration and innovation.

4. Empathy Over Apathy

Empathy involves a deep and compassionate understanding of others’ experiences and emotions. It requires us to move beyond cognitive recognition to emotional engagement. Organizations can create environments where everyone feels valued by considering the impacts on individuals across different identities and fostering inclusive practices. Empathy enhances collaboration and encourages holistic solutions to complex social and environmental challenges, promoting a more inclusive and effective workplace.

5. Vulnerability Over Shame

Vulnerability is the willingness to show up and be seen when we can’t control the outcome. It requires immense courage and is essential for authentic leadership. Embracing vulnerability over perfectionism and shame allows us to foster a culture where failure is seen as an opportunity for growth. This principle encourages authenticity, humility, and the courage to engage in open, honest dialogues, making feedback a tool for mutual growth and understanding.

6. Wholeheartedness Over Disengagement

Wholeheartedness involves cultivating courage, compassion, and deep connections, living with purpose, and actively seeking to make a positive impact. It stands in stark contrast to disengagement, which reflects indifference and a loss of empathy. By living authentically and being purpose-driven, individuals can align their actions with their values and passions, contributing to a meaningful and impactful life. This principle promotes a culture of deep engagement, meaningful connections, and collective efforts toward positive societal and environmental contributions.

Cultivating Co-Leadership and a People-Positive Culture

To prepare for effective co-leadership in self-managed organizations, it’s highly beneficial for individuals to adopt the IMPACT mindset. Cultivating this mindset helps build psychological safety at the team level and fosters more self-organization. For those seeking to develop leadership skills, the IMPACT mindset is foundational. When individuals working together all cultivate this mindset, they build a more people-positive environment, a more supportive culture for growth and development, and a more impactful organization as a whole.

Benefits of the IMPACT Mindset

Adopting the IMPACT mindset is about more than just changing workplace practices; it’s about transforming how we interact with and support one another. It transforms not just workplaces but also individuals’ lives, encouraging a holistic approach to personal and professional development.

By embracing self-awareness, curiosity, trust, empathy, vulnerability, and wholeheartedness, we can create work environments where people feel respected, included, and empowered. This shift not only enhances productivity and engagement within the workplace but also frees individuals to make meaningful contributions to the world beyond their professional lives.

The principles of the IMPACT mindset have been influenced by my experience working in many organizational models, as well as the work of various thought leaders and researchers. For those interested in delving deeper into these concepts, here are some recommended resources:
